Yamaha XT660, 2004-2016
The Yamaha
XT660 is dual-purpose on/off road motorcycles released by Yamaha Motors
as a replacement for the XT600.
X = stands for 4 strokes
T = TRAIL
The XT660R
is the standard Enduro model
'R' stands for racing.
The Yamaha XT660 has a reputation for
being a fun commuter that’s too heavy to be taken seriously as an
off-roader.
The 660cc liquid-cooled single cylinder thumper engine is renowned for
its ability to soak up abuse and keep on going, meaning the XT is a
great option for long distance touring
Two other versions of this motorcycle are
being produced alongside the XT660R
the standard Enduro model XT660R is taller, with an off-road friendly
21-inch front wheel
The other two versions are =
XT660X
= A more street-oriented Supermoto version, with 17” rims (Motard)
XT660Z Ténéré
= An Adventure Touring version, with a tall screen (Dual-Sport)
All versions utilize the same engine and
share some chassis components.

New Model
Also known as Yamaha XT600 E
The most important change of the XT 600 which had
only been using a kick start was in 1990; the XT 600 E was presented as
a new model
with a more contemporary design.
Chrome-plated steel wheel instead of
aluminum wheels, now without a tachometer, with the exhaust as the
supporting frame member, a 13.9-litre tank and an electric starter.
In addition, the oil tank, which was previously located under the left
side cover, was moved forward behind the steering head between the frame
and girder bridge.
Due to high demand, the XT 600 K, which
featured a kick-starter, but was otherwise structurally identical to the
XT 600 E model, was introduced to the market; the series ran until 1995.
1991 =
the somewhat obsolete XT600Z Ténéré was replaced by the water-cooled,
five-valve Yamaha XTZ660, which did not manage to carry over the
legendary reputation of its air-cooled predecessors.
1993:
New footrest brackets and other minor
detail changes for the Yamaha XT600E.
1995:
Larger
Upgrade.
New bodywork. New switchgear. New tachometer and
other minor modifications.
Upgraded front disc brake. Larger 15 litre
fuel tank.
Due to more stringent emissions requirements, the power of the XT 600 E,
which had become the only available model, was reduced by 4 kW to 29 kW
(39 hp)
The clutch actuation on the engine body was moved from the left to the
right side, and the muffler was no longer part of the rear frame

Yamaha
XT600, 1984-1989
The XT 600 is
considered to be an all-purpose Enduro, which is suitable for use on the
road as well as off-road driving.
It is a development of the original XT series
'X' stands for 4 strokes, 'T' for TRAIL.
The Yamaha XT600E is about as straightforward, reliable and solid as an
old school trail bike gets. The Yamaha XT600E was the last of a long
line of 4-valve air-cooled Yamaha singles, starting off with the
original, much-loved XT500 of the mid-70s. This is a true trailie:
decent off-round and straightforward and ujn-fussy on.
The first XT 600 was introduced in June 1983, the XT 600ZL Ténéré based
on the XT 550 engine, kick start only, with the 30-Litre white tank.
In 1984 the basic XT 600 was introduced
to "replace" the XT 550.
In addition to the changes in design, the main difference was an
11.5-litre tank instead of the 30-litre long-range 600ZL Ténéré's tank;
the road model Yamaha SRX was derived later.
